Why are diamonds saw blades unsuitable as cutting materials for steel?

The diamond tends to break down and the freed carbon molecules migrate into the iron of the steel, resulting in fast dulling of the diamond and short tool life.

Diamond can be used to cut (grind) steel, but the diamond tool life is often very short. Keeping contact pressure and interface temperature down will somewhat extend tool life.
